Resolving Adult Acne

Acne doesn’t care how old you are. Many people believe that only teenagers have to treat acne. That could not be further from the truth. Adult acne affects 25% of adult men and 50% of adult women.

Although the experts don’t agree on the cause of acne, most do agree that it is related to hormones. The maturity of the oil glands in the skin is directly related to hormones. When hormones get out of sync, the probability of an acne occurrence increases. This is primarily due to the excess oil on the skin. When you have too much oil, zits, blemishes and pimples emerge.

By nature women, experience more acne than men. Because of their normal cycles, hormonal acne is a constant threat. Some women have been surprised to find out that their birth control pills have helped them control their acne. The reason is that some birth control pills control the balance of androgens in the body. If the androgens remain balanced, acne is not as likely to occur. However, every one is different. Always consult a doctor before taking any type of oral medication for acne.

Many adults have had great success in overcoming acne by following a simple skin-cleaning regimen.

Gently Wash Your Face and Acne Affected Skin

First, they wash their face and acne skin with a gentle skin cleanser. Be sure to be very gentle when washing the skin. Never rub too hard or long. Avoid regular soap and anything that tends to dry out your skin.

Use Benzoyl Peroxide to Kill Acne Bacteria on the Skin

Although there are benzoyl peroxide solutions as strong as 10%, use only the 2.5% solution. The first time you try it, apply it to a small area of the skin to insure you have no skin reaction. Most people have no problem at all, but a small percent experience an allergic reaction. After verifying that your skin has no reaction, gently apply a generous amount of benzoyl peroxide to your acne-affected skin.

Don’t irritate Your Skin

Avoid rubbing your skin too hard. This only irritates the skin and worsens your acne condition. Also, avoid pinching or picking the pimples on your face. If your skin is red and irritated, don’t start a skin-cleaning regimen until it has returned to a more normal level. You will only continue the irritation and lessen the likelihood of success in treating your acne.

Use a Gentle Moisturizer

In order to keep your skin from becoming overly dry, use an oil free moisturizer and gently rub this into your skin. It will keep your skin appearance much better and reduce potential irritation.

The key to overcoming acne is to consistently follow your skin care routine. Treating acne is not a one-time event, even for adults. Sometimes the best adult acne treatment is the simplest. Give this a try. It’s easy and inexpensive.
